Railway move into share of top; Gar and Tarf win well

Railway Union moved into a share of top spot in men’s Leinster Division One with a 3-0 win over Portrane, joining UCD on 22 points.

The Park Avenue side did it with a slightly patched up squad with Simon McKeever moving to Australia while David McCarthy, Chris Reilly and Eoin MacArthur on the injured list.

Nonetheless, they secured the points with Rob Devlin, Adam O’Callaghan and Canadian Under-21 international Michael MacKenzie on the mark.

Clontarf moved into the top half of the table with a comprehensive 5-2 win over Avoca with all the damage being done in the first half.

Matthew Owen, Robert Forrest, Michael Duggan, Timmy Cullen and Luke Hayden all scored in the first half as they showed a clinical edge in the circle.

The Cullen goal was the pick of them, starting with him winning the ball on his own defensive 23m line, passing into midfield and following it through to in on top of the circle and rocket into the left sideboard.

The second half was more even with Avoca getting two, Eli Bigwood firing home a penalty corner and Evan Rankin scoring the other from play.

Rathgar trimmed the gap to the leading trio to four points as Stephen Thompson, Andy Malcolm and Mark Collins weighed in with the goals against Dublin North.

Gar will look to continue to keep their hopes of chasing down the top three when they face Dublin University next time out on January 26.

UCD return to action next Saturday with a home date against Portrane while Corinthian will play their first match of the new year when they host Clontarf.
