Leinster Schoolboys Senior A League
Wesley 3 (D Walsh, G Gibney, M Samuel) St Andrew’s 2 (B Walker, G Garratt)
Mark Samuel’s quality finish earned Wesley the Leinster boys Senior A league, getting the better of St Andrew’s at Newpark this afternoon after a ding-dong battle.
They led three times over the course of the match with Samuel’s strike ultimately winning the day, claiming back the league crown from their arch rivals.
Daragh Walsh had given the Ballinteer outfit an early lead from a neat corner move before Ben Walker levelled the game just before half-time at 1-1.
Gavin Gibney’s backhand corner touch restored Wesley’s advantage midway through the second half only for Guy Sarratt to tie things up once more at 2-2.
But Samuel won it inside the last five minutes of the tie for the silverware. It was the second time Wesley have gotten the better of Andrew’s this season having edged them out of the All-Ireland Schoolboys Championships at the semi-final stage.
Andrew’s, though, are in pole position in the Whiteside Trophy and need just a draw from their second meeting with Wesley in that competition. Both are through to the Senior Cup semi-finals.
In the B final, Newpark won a penalty stroke competition against Mount Temple after normal time had ended 3-3. Ben Mayberry made three saves in the shoot-out to secure the win for the host school.
