Newpark’s junior boys reached the B league final as they swept to a 3-0 win over Saint Andrew’s B last Friday. In a lively, well-contested game from the start, the Blackrock outfit got on the front foot early on, leaving Andrew’s to defend deep for long periods.
The danger signs were showing as Toby Fowler-Hudson hit the post from close in. The siege was lifted sporadicly down the Andrew’s right side as the pacy Scott Thompson caused regular problems.
But Newpark always looked the more likely to score and the deadlock was broken late in the first half from a well-worked corner that Ewan Ramsay drilled home following a double-switch.
The second half became a more open affair. The hard-working Stephen McCann got a foothold in midfield and Andrew’s started to play higher up the field with their forwards pressing hard, making it more difficult for the Newpark back line.
David Murphy, in the Newpark goal, was forced to make a brilliant reaction save and Nathan Moore deflected off the line following another sharp Saint Andrew’s attack.
However, a quick counter from newpark found Evan Rankin free in the D to coolly slot home from close range. The game was put beyond doubt when Jim O’Reilly volleyed home a rebound.
In the A league, Wesley will play St Andrew’s in the final after the latter made it through via penalty strokes against High School. Wesley saw off Mount Temple in their semi-final. The final has been switched to take place at 4pm at St Andrew’s on Wednesday.
