Gerard’s through to Senior Cup quarter-finals

St Gerard’s kept alive their chances of retaining the Leinster schoolgirls Senior Cup title as they prevailed in a shoot-out against Mount Anville last Saturday morning.

Played out in front of a packed house in Bray, normal time ended scoreless, leading to one-on-ones in which the hosts prevailed 3-0 to move into the quarter-finals of the competition.

They are joined there by Loreto Foxrock who have made quick progress through the competition after a belated start to their campaign. They saw off Loreto St Stephen’s Green 5-1 before seeing off Loreto Beaufort in the second round with a goal coming in the last five minutes from Orlaith Damery for a 2-1 victory.

Ellen Curran was a driving force for Foxrock in the Beaufort win with Katie Fearon and Grace McLoughlin needing to be on guard to keep out many of her forages forward while Curran’s battle with Laura Nagle in midfield was another key area.

Alexandra College progressed their bid for a league and cup double with a couple of quickfire victories. They won their second round match at Mount Sackville last Saturday morning 6-0 with Katherine Egan to the fore.

Her link work with Ava Beatty was superb and she grabbed a goal from a corner to boot. Beatty netted twice, once from the top of the circle with a clean strike, the other from close range after Abi Acheson’s initial shot had hit the post.

Aleisha Barton scored Alex’s first goal from another good move as they built a 4-0 half-time lead. Habika O’Connor and Jan Cleary extended the score out to six.

On Wednesday, meanwhile, the Milltown school saw off King’s Hospital to reach the semi-finals. Barton and Sophie Roopnarinesingh proved a handful up front but found Jade Arundel in superb form between the posts, making a string of amazing saves.

She kept out two corners easily before Freya McDermott’s shot was deflected in by Acheson. Alex continued to attack but were hassled and harried all the time by KH, making things incredibly difficult for the league champions.

It kept the tie in the mix until deep in the second half when Lucy O’Brien put in a perfect crash ball for Chloe Harrison to deflect in the insurance goal.

King’s Hospital reached the last eight with a 2-1 win over Loreto Dalkey. Holy Child Killiney, meanwhile, were comfortable 4-0 winners over Mount Temple. St Andrew’s defeated Our Lady’s 4-1 in their second round tie.
