Rory Nichols silver goal winner propelled Monkstown II into the quarter-finals of the men’s Irish Junior Cup, eliminating last year’s champions Pembroke II.
In a dramatic tie, Monkstown led for a long time courtesy of Andrew Fogarty’s goal but Scott Furlong, the hero of last year’s IJC final, nailed a last second corner to send the game into extra time.
Nichols, though, scored a corner in the time added on to ensure progression and set up an enticing date with Banbridge in the last eight.
It is one of just two finalised quarter-final match-ups after a snow-affected round with Cookstown’s date with Railway Union, Instonians game with Rathgar and Annadale’s tie against Cork Harlequins all falling foul of the conditions.
Three Rock Rovers II are the other Leinster side to have their place confirmed in the quarters after they saw off division four’s Dublin University’s second string with Johnny Roberts, Eoin Buttanshaw and Ben Epstein on the mark. Rovers will travel to either Inst or Rathgar.
A hugely experienced Lisnagarvey look serious contenders in the competition with former Irish centre-mid Mark Raphael and first team skipper John Gray in the line-up. Phil Stirling netted a hat trick in their thumping 12-0 away win in Raphoe as they bid for a double after going unbeaten in ten games in Ulster’s Junior One.
Banbridge saw off Glenanne 5-2 while Cork C of I were 6-1 winners over North Down. Garvey host C of I next on February 14.
In Leinster’s division two, YMCA were 8-2 winners over Corinthian with Tasmanian William Daking netting a hat trick while Alex Price and Graham McCoy nabbed a couple each, a far cry from the scoreless draw the two sides played out earlier this term.
Jack O’Grady also scored his first senior goal. The result lifts YM up a couple of places in the league standings.
