Alexandra and Loreto on the Green semi-final bound

Alexandra College set up a Senior Cup semi-final date with surprise package Loreto on the Green on February 23 as they got past the challenges of Mount Anville and Newpark, respectively.

For Alex, they were pushed all the way to penalties in front of a big Milltown crowd last Saturday morning in a lively tie, filled with intrigue.

The hosts started on the front foot and put Mout Anville back four, marshalled by Suzanne Kelly, under a lot of pressure and created great chances for Sophie Roopnarinesingh and Ava Beatty.

Both saw their efforts well saved while a Katherine Egan corner rebound was also kept out. At the far end, Sophie Gleeson had to clear a spinning ball off the line after Ruth Cullen’s initial save.

Alex did have a number of corners, the pick of which Pia Diepman deflected fractionally wide, with the final one on the half-time hooter but it bounced up into the influential Louise McCollum’s cheek, denying them a chance.

The second half saw Alex create a number of chances while Mount Anville also pushed on through Claudia Cotter, winning a corner which was slipped left but saved by Cullen and Isabel Delamar completed the save by volleying a clearance off the line.

Extra time could not produce a winner either, leading to penalties. Pia Diepman swapped into goals for Alex and duly saved in the first round before Freya McDermott put her side in front. Diepman duly saved twice more before McCollum, who played on with a patched up cheek, made it 2-0. A fourth successive Diepman save saw them over the line.

Senior One side Loreto on the Green will be their next opponents after they got through the second round with a 2-1 win over Santa Sabina before going on to beat Newpark 3-2 in the quarter-finals.

They will be serious underdogs against Premier division opposition when the final four game comes around but, in Sarah Torrans, have a speed merchant who can always provide a threat going forward.

The other half of the draw needs a bit of tidying up after all the frost delays. St Gerard’s hopes of bouncing back from their Senior Premier final defeat has seen them eliminate Muckross 1-0 via Deanna Kissane’s goal in round one and they built on that with a 3-0 win over Wesley.

Next is a date at Loreto Foxrock in the quarter-finals where the winner will face either Holy Child Killiney or St Andrew’s in the semi-finals.
