Paul Gleghorne could line out against older brother Mark this weekend as Ireland take on England in a pair of challenge matches in Belfield following both players’ selection for their respective teams.
Paul was named in a 25-player Irish panel, making this outcome a distinct possibility after injury and selection issues had stopped this from happening previously.Mark represented Ireland 80 times before formally switching allegiances in 2011 to England after a three-year period outside of international hockey to further his top-level hockey aspirations.
He missed the 2012 Olympic Games due to plantar fasciitis but was part of the English World Cup side that finished fourth last month in The Hague and, along with fellow Ulster man Iain Lewers, is named in their panel for the Commonwealth Games. Paul made his Irish debut in 2009 after Mark had stepped away from the panel.
For the games on Friday and Saturday, Craig Fulton has retained the 22-players used for last week’s pair of wins over Wales while adding Ronan Gormley, Eugene Magee – Ireland’s two most capped players – and goalkeeper David Harte.
“The two test matches against England this weekend will give me another look at some new combinations,” Fulton said of the panel. “Also it gives the squad a fantastic opportunity to play competitively for selection for the Irish team competing in the Investec Cup the following week in London.”
Indeed, Fulton’s side will also make their first appearance on television during the new coach’s tenure on July 13 at that event. English Hockey have confirmed Sky Sports will broadcast the final day of the London Cup with Ireland set to be involved in a playoff game with either South Africa, Scotland or England.
