Rathgar make it back-to-back promotions

Women’s Division 2/3 playoff
Rathgar 1 (Vicky Jones) Three Rock Ladies 0

Rathgar joined Avoca in gaining promotion to women’s Leinster division two as Vicky Jones’ goal early in the second half fired them to playoff victory over Three Rock Ladies at Botanic on Tuesday evening.

Rathgar earned their playoff shot after a third place finish in division three as Pembroke III were unable to be promoted due to the presence of their second team in the second tier. With Avoca taking automatic promotion as runners-up, it left Rathgar in a position to move up for the second successive season.

Who they were to play was eventually decided after an appeal and counter-appeal over player eligibility saw Three Rock’s 2-1 loss to Trinity II over-turned. The students also had the result of their 2-1 loss against UCD II over-turned, too, but once the dust had settled, it left Three Rock as the side deemed to be in ninth place overall.

But that proved only a temporary reprieve for the Grange Road side as they came up against a fast and skilful Rathgar side that were good value for their victory.

In the first half, Doireann de Paor’s pace down the right wing was an effervescent threat while Barbara Snow needed to put in a series of saves to deny Elaine Ross, among others, from close range.

Julie Garvey and Sinead Holden also put in strong shifts at the back, protecting the circle well and keeping Rathgar’s quartet of corners out. On the counter, Isabelle Hoyne’s pace did test the likes of Nicky Levis and Zara Heggie but they provided a strong base for their side to build on.

And they duly got their reward after the turnaround when a corner was switched left and Jones shot took a deflection to whizz up into the top right stanchion of the goal.

They maintained that lead without too much drama despite Maebh Holden’s lively runs, leaving them to celebrate back-to-back promotions.
