The lowdown: It has been a preseason of two halves for Corinthian who look like they can return to the IHL placings after initial signs suggested a struggle ahead. A heavy loss to Railway, a 3-1 setback against Railway and a draw with Rathgar gave those indications but the arrival of their four South Africans in Ireland gives compatriot Brendon Carolan a lot more to work with.
Since then, they saw off TRR seconds and Annadale and were more than competitive against Pembroke and Monkstown.
The jewel in the crown is Jethro Eustice but he will miss early parts of the season after he was selected for the African Cup of Nations. Matt Fairweather and Matt Brown offer twin drag-flicks while Gowan Jones, with three international caps to his name, is a strong replacement for Ross Murray between the posts.
Dan Treacy will be back from Australia during the season while Neil Young will hope to get over a nasty summer hand injury but Barry Glavey will have limited availability with his army commitments. Karl Smith captains the side. The returning Jordan Sutton has a penchant for the spectacular and offers bite up front.
They showed plenty of ability to play a high pace game in the Super Cup last weekend but whether they have enough artillery to threaten last season’s top four on a consistent basis remains to be seen.
First three games: Sept 14 – Three Rock Rovers (a); Sept 21 – Glenanne (h); Sept 28 – Rathgar (a)
