Leinster Schoolgirl’s Senior Premier League
Alexandra College pushed their early claims as one of the major contenders for the Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League as they opened up with a 2-0 victory over Wesley College.
A pair of corner goals did the damage as Rachel Gray and Roisin Doody finished off switch moves – one in each half – to see off a strong opponent. Both sides were shy key players as Irish underage players Millie O’Donnell, Anna Roopnarinesingh and Sara Quill all sat out the tie.
But Alex made light of those absences in the first half as Hannah McDermott was to the fore, drawing a couple of early saves from Carolyn Crampton. Wesley were penned in their own half for much of the first stanza but had the odd counter with Amber Kinlan set free.
Alex, though, hit the front in the 24th minute from their second corner as the ball was switched right by Amber Gleeson and Gray finished off. Wesley offered much more in the second period but were rocked when Doody finished off another switch.
Lauren Hunt, Lauren Haughton and Emily Reid all had chances to reduce the gap but none accrued as Vanessa Winn took an effort off the line amid a goal-mouth scramble, ensuring a strong start to Section A for the reigning All-Ireland champions.
Elsewhere, St Gerard’s showed they have plenty to offer this year as Ireland U-18 international Claire Foley grabbing a hat-trick while Bryony Biggam – who scored twice on her Loreto division one debut – and Hannah Reynolds nabbed two more in a 5-0 win over newly promoted St Columba’s.
Muckross and Mount Sackville were also first round winners in this section while St Andrew’s – 2011 Kate Russell champs – got a marquee win over Mount Anville in a lively 3-2 result. Rathdown, courtesy of Stephanie Burns and Karla Ray goals, picked off a win over Loreto Dalkey while High School won at Loreto, Beaufort.
Elsewhere, the Leinster Under-18 girl’s squad was announced this week for the interprovincial tournament that is being held in Three Rock Rovers on October 20 and 21.
The side has a very strong Alex contingent with six players from the school team included while goalkeeper Carolyn Crampton making it seven from Old Alex club.
Crampton is one eight of the panel back from last season’s vintage with Kate Dillon and Colm Blennerhassett once again making up the coaching team.
Of those eight, Sarah Hawkshaw captains the side while Dublin minor ladies football star Molly Lamb, McDermott, O’Donnell, Cliodhna Loughlin, Jessica McGirr and Jenny Long are also back in the fold.
