Men’s Division One
YMCA 2 (Marcus Richardson, David Robinson) Corinthian 1 (Henry Micks)
YM ground out a hard-fought win at Milltown, coming from a goal behind to beat Corinthian and have three points in the bank over second placed Glenanne who have two catch-up games to come.
They trailed in the 25th minute when Henry Micks swept into the roof of the net after Iain Walker had initially saved. Indeed, amid sustained pressure Walker had just produced a triple save from a corner moments earlier before the reds broke the deadlock.
But YM were back in the game when Andy Walker crossed to the back post for Marcus Richardson to dive in at the back post again to make it 1-1.
David Robinson scored the winner with a drag-flick to the bottom left corner. Their evening ended on a sour note, though, as Mikey Fry received a red card following an altercation with Barry Glavey at the bottom of an overhead.
YM held more of the possession but Corinthian looked dangerous on the break but will rue a couple of missed chances. Chris Pelow had one drag taken off the line while Rowland Rixon-Fuller fired one wide when well-placed in the circle.
Monkstown 2 (Gareth Watkins 2) UCD 1 (Tim Hill)
Two spectacular Gareth Watkins shots in the first half were enough for Monkstown to get the three points which sees them yet more comfortable in the IHL places with a top three finish now well in their sights.
The Irish international’s first came from an audacious angle, pumping the ball home after Fran Lee had stolen the ball and worked it to the endline.
Nick Dee played a hand in the second but it was marginal compared to the incredible work of Watkins, skipping past a couple of defenders on the right sideline, cutting into the circle and roofed brilliantly.
Billy McEnery clipped a post and Ross Watkins hit the bar and any nervous moments were delayed to the death when Tim Hill nabbed the ball and found a way past Dave Fitzgerald. The goalkeeper had earlier kept out a series of two corners but were otherwise reasonably comfortable.
Fingal 9 (David Bane 2, Adrian Sweeney 2, Shane Dempsey 2, Chris Neville, Tom Manning, Glen Shekleton) Weston 0
Fingal became the first side to run Weston completely ragged this term a couple of days after Lucan side’s morale-sapping defeat to UCD, falling to the ALSAA side for the fourth time this season.
After an initially dogged phase, Chris Neville’s goal opened the floodgates and it was 5-0 at half-time as David Bane fired a drag-flick, Adrian Sweeney scored two and Tom Manning another.
Shane Dempsey got his first senior goals in the second period; Glen Shekleton added another corner and Bane got one from play – all coming in the second period.
