Schoolboy’s Senior Trophy
Sutton Park 2 (Harry Spain 2) High School 1 (David Howard)
Harry Spain’s corner double handed Sutton Park a place in the final of the Leinster Schoolboy’s Senior Trophy final, ending High School’s interest in the competition.
It means a new-look final as both of last year’s finalists were ousted in the last four as Sutton now go on to play St Columba’s in the decider.
The northside hosts had slightly the edge of a low-key first half but saw four penalty corners repelled with goalkeeper Carrie Anderson enjoying an excellent day between the posts.
After the interval, the game opened up markedly and Sutton pushed ahead when Spain fired home a low corner, via a defender’s stick.
Andy Tyrell in midfield and Killian Flood down the right were providing much of the artistry while Keith O’Hare’s pressure on Glenanne senior star Shane O’Donoghue was a feature.
High School, though, did respond well with Darragh Butler key; Sutton goalkeeper Tom Fee was drawn into a couple of good saves, keeping O’Donoghue’s powerful efforts at bay. But with ten minutes to go, Spain found the bottom-right corner once more with another low bullet.
High School responded quickly as they took a quick free on 25 which was slipped to O’Donoghue down the right wing and he pulled across goal for David Howard to make for a big closing scene.
And extra-time almost came to pass when High School won a last minute corner. The push-out, though, did not go exactly to plan and O’Donoghue’s improvised drag went just wide.
It sets up a decider with Columba’s on March 9 while the draw for the semi-finals of the Senior Cup was also made. Sutton will play Wesley while St Andrew’s are up against Columba’s.
