Rip-roaring Wesley win Junior thriller over Saints

Schoolboy’s Junior Cup, first round
Wesley 5 (Luke Madeley, Kirk Shimmins, Jonathan Roberts, Scott Dagg, Ian Stuart) St Andrew’s 3 (Lee Cole 2, Cillian Hynes)

Controversy, cards and a glut of fine goals made for a memorable Junior Cup first round tie in Ballinteer this afternoon as Wesley won the battle of the big guns and mark themselves as favourites for this title.

In an explosive first half, the hosts flew into a three-goal lead only to end the half only ahead by a single-goal as Andrew’s rallied excellently.

Ian Stuart went closest in the opening phases but saw his fizzing reverse deflected around the post by Stephen Wolfe. Wesley did not have to wait too long to go ahead as Luke Madeley slung home a drag-flick from the day’s first corner, shooting exquisitely to Wolfe’s left side.

Lively winger Ben Campbell went close at the far end only for Kirk Shimmins to respond immediately with a second from the next attack. Skipper Jonathon Roberts squared a free on the 25 for Shimmins to punch the ball past a first defender before swivelling on his reverse in a crowded circle to sweetly clip into the backboard.

And two became three when Stuart was set free on the right baseline and pulled back for Roberts to net.

The Booterstown visitors rallied brilliantly, winning a corner instantly which drew a diving stick-save from AJ Browne. The next phase, though, saw Campbell pick a fine pass, providing a technically difficult reverse-pass on the move to Cillian Hynes on the back-post.

His initial effort was blocked but he picked up the rebound and applied a generous helping of hang-time to audaciously lob Browne. His initial celebrations were briefly stalled as the ball slid down the inside netting and dropped out behind the sideboard.

A brief delay ensued before the goal was confirmed and when Shimmins was handed a ten-minute sin-binning, Andrew’s took advantage to make it 3-2 in the 33rd minute, winning a corner which Cole scored from a neat switch left.

The second half continued at the break-neck intensity, Alan Oglesby controlling a Madeley overhead superbly but his shot was denied by Wolfe. Shimmins – on his return to action – twice spoiled an Andrew’s corner before Scott Dagg got the game-breaking goal.

His piledriver from the edge of the circle snuck in at the near post and while there were debates again whether the ball had entered the goal via the side-netting, the consensus from the crowd in line with the shot was it went in the right-side of the post.

With 16 minutes left, it was the gamebreaker. There was no doubt about their fifth which arrived moments later, Stuart crushing a reverse when he was set free in the circle, one which was still on the rise and it stretched the net.

Again, Andrew’s rallied and they earned a lifeline when Hynes’ attempted shot was impeded and Cole converted the stroke with six minutes to go.

But their task was made tougher when Mark Loughrey was sin-binned and Wesley held out to set up a second round tie with Sutton Park, 4-1 winners over St Columba’s.

Elsewhere, Mount Temple will meet St Killian’s in the Junior Cup next Tuesday in a repeat of last week’s league game which the Clonskea school won narrowly 2-1.

St Columba’s beat Newpark in the first round of the Senior Trophy to set up a tie with either Kilkenny or Dundalk GS.

Robert Duggan was the star man for Mount Temple as they claimed the odd goal in three against St Columba’s to win 2-1 in the Minor Cup.

In the U-13 draw, Killian’s overcame Taney 2-1 while St Columba’s 5-0 success over St Andrew’s Prep sets up a quarter-final berth at King’s Hospital. St Andrew’s are into the last eight following their win over Newpark.
