Ulster complete third double on the spin

Ulster retained both the ESB U-18 and U-16 girl’s interpro titles – both for the third year running – with some panache this afternoon in Milltown, completing a clean sweep in both competitions.

Leinster proved the main challenger for their crown with early morning wins at both levels over the South East setting up a final game showdown to decide the destination of each trophy.

But Ulster had too much in the tank, especially at U-18 level, where their array of stars on the rise cracked home ten goals from their two games.

Katie Mullan was the goal-getter supreme, clocking up a hat-trick against a tired Connacht side playing their second game of the day before adding a brace against the blues in a 3-0 win.

Powered by Leah Ewart in midfield, fliers like Chloe Brown used their Irish U-17 experience at the Youth Olympic Games to earn numerous corners and plenty of chances from play in a breath-taking display against the Westerners.

And while Leinster provided a slightly sterner examination, Ulster were too strong in the final reckoning.

Earlier, Mount Anville duo Aisling Naughton and Lisa McCarthy accounted for three of the four goals which secured the win over South East with Alexandra College sharp-shooter Erika Hinkson also on target.

In the U-16 competition, Sara Quill’s double put paid to the South East in a 2-1 success. Bethany Barr’s single strike gave Ulster a winning start to their day ahead of Connacht and she was again on the mark against the tournament hosts with Emma Kernaghan weighing in to clinch the title with a 2-0 win over Leinster.
