Santa Sabina take local bragging rights

Santa Sabina advanced to the last eight of the Leinster School’s Senior Cup as they won the Sutton derby, taking the tie 2-1 in extra-time at Sutton Park.

Sabina had started the stronger but were rocked on their heals by their Premier League hosts who snatched the lead on the counter-attack when second year Isobel Phifer touched over the line.

And her side went within inches of doubling the lead when Shannon Price crashed the ball to the back post but a deflection slipped just wide, keeping it 1-0 at the interval. But Sabina were back on terms when a corner move was swept in on Sarah Keogan’s reverse early in the second half.

And the lively forward was put through twice by Kate McKiernan, exploiting Keogan’s pace, but her first effort went just wide while her pass the second time round evaded a team-mate.

But she did grab her second of the day in extra-time when Beth Cassidy played her in down the right and this time steadied herself to push past the on-rushing keeper.

Sutton Park piled on the pressure late on but strong defensive work from Laura Jo Minogue, Lauren Keane and Aoibhin Stokes prevented any clear cut chances bar a last minute corner. They were unable to convert, though, and Sabina took the local bragging rights.

Elsewhere, a large number of games fell victim to the freezing conditions last Saturday, making for a busy February of back matches. Alex’s match against Loreto, Beaufort and Mount Anville’s fixture against Loreto, Foxrock were both postponed and will now take place next Saturday morning.

Senior Cup, round two: Sutton Park 1 Santa Sabina 2 aet
