The dates have been announced for the Leinster schoolboy’s league finals. February 29 will see the Junior A and B deciders take place in Wesley College while the U-13 A, B and C finals will be in St Andrew’s. The Senior A, B and All-Ireland play-off games are in Newpark on March 7 with the Minor A and B events in St Columba’s.

These competitions are nearly all at the semi-final stages now with perennial contenders Wesley and St Andrew’s through at all four levels to the A final four stage. At senior level, they are followed through by Sutton Park while St Columba’s will play off against Newpark for second place behind Wesley in Pool 2.

In the Juniors, eight wins from eight outings see Andrews through with either Sutton or High School joining them. In Pool 2, St Columba’s topped their group with a perfect record ahead of Wesley, courtesy of their 2-1 win in the group stages.

Again, Andrew’s bossed their Minor pool while King’s Hosptial need two wins to prevent either Sutton from making it into this set of A semi-finals. Wesley will be joined probably by Mount Temple from the other side of the draw with Columba’s and Dundalk outsiders.

In the U-13 competition, St Andrew’s will be joined by either St Killian’s or KH while Wesley and Andrews B or Newpark have eyes still on the prize.

In the cups, Columba’s have continued their good year with victory over Dundalk in round one of the Senior Trophy and await the winner of High School and Sutton Park in the semi-finals. Kilkenny are on top of the draw and will play either King’s Hos or St Killians.

Wesley and St Andrew’s await the finalists of the Trophy in the Senior Cup semi-finals but have been busying themselves in the South of Ireland schoolboy competition, facing off in a round-robin against Cork sides Bandon and Ashton.

Andrew’s won out against their Dublin rivals 4-0 last week and look the main contenders this year while Wesley drew 3-3 with Ashton in one of their other ties.

Columba’s will also spy a spot in the Junior final having made it past the challenge of Dundalk and Mount Temple in the opening rounds of the competition and are now in the semi-final. With Wesley and St Andrew’s both in the top half of the draw with Kilkenny and Sutton Park for company, it makes that section of the draw a potential minefield.

In the minor competition, the quarter-final stage is set to be played in the coming week while at U-13 level, St Andrew’s have powered through three rounds of competition to reach the semi-finals, getting the better of U-13 C sides Whitechurch and Taney before undoing Dundalk in the quarters.

High School secured their place in the Leinster Schoolgirl’s Senior Cup semi-final with their fourth win in three weeks, quickly making their way through three rounds of the competition at the expense of Our Lady’s Grove, Mount Sackville and, most recently, King’s Hospital.

Combined with a last-gasp win over Muckross in the league, courtesy of Saoirse O’Donoghue’s goal for a thrilling 3-2 success, it puts the Rathgar school still in contention in two competitions.

They showed their Premier class to get the better of Senior One side Our Lady’s Grove in round one before facing an intense battle with Mount Sackville, normal time ending 0-0 while no further goals accrued in extra time.

But a brilliant performance in goal by Lia McCann saw High School win the penalty one-on-one shoot-out 4-1 and advance to the final eight.

There, they met King’s Hospital – victors over St Raphaela’s in round two – in Palmerstown, a tie in which both teams started strong with both sides creating many opportunities. The visitors were the ones to eventually break the deadlock when Jenny Long whipped in a cracking shot into the backboard.

And her side looked more likely to snatch a second but Kings Hospital continued fighting and defending well to stay in the game until a last second goal helped High School to victory on a 2-0 scoreline.

Meanwhile, St Andrew’s were among the major contenders to fall in the last week in a truly remarkable tie with Wesley College. It went to the 14th round of penalty one-on-ones, one of the innovations brought into the competition this term, using the format from the European an Irish Hockey Leagues.

Normal time had ended 2-2 after Lauren McGrane has initially handed Wesley the lead only for Andrew’s to bounce back and lead at 2-1. Anna May Whelan levelled matters to force extra-time and subsequently penalties.

Aisling Naughton notched a third hat-trick of the season for Mount Anville to see them through to a quarter-final date with Wesley, meaning another of the league semi-finalists will fall by the wayside. Naughton’s treble came in a 4-0 success over Holy Child, Killiney with Julia O’Connell also on the mark.

Leinster Senior Schoolgirls Cup, quarter-final draw: Teresians v Loreto Dalkey/Loreto Beaufort; Rathdown v Muckross/Alexandra College; Kings Hospital 0 High School 2; Mount Anville v Wesley College – to be played by February 4

Senior Schoolgirl’s Cup – round one update
Wesley set up an enticing last 16 date with St Andrew’s as they had too much in the tank for Loreto, Bray to progress from the first round of the Leinster Schoolgirl’s Senior Cup.

First half efforts from Niamh Sweeney, Sophie Pratt and Anna-May Whelan put them on their way in the first half and they never looked back against the Senior One side.

It starts off a hectic seven-day period in which they will also face Mount Sackville (Thursday, January 19) and High School (Wednesday, January 25) in the Premier League to decide their fate with the three sides all chasing second spot in the Group. Alexandra College confirmed they will top the pool after they got the better of Holy Child, Killiney 3-0.

Elsewhere in the cup, Jane Fennelly’s pair of short corner goals for Mount Anville picked up a big result as they edged past an impressive St Gerard’s outfit 2-1 in an-all Premier tie. And they will have another tricky tie when they travel to Holy Child in round two.

In a similarly tight battle, King’s Hospital got the sole goal to get the better of Santa Sabina and will hope to, once again, the Premier difference tell against Senior One opposition in round two when they meet St Raphaela’s in Palmerstown.

High School, meanwhile, will play what looks to be another round two cracker as they advanced past Our Lady’s Grove and now face Mount Sackville – the pair drew 0-0 earlier in the campaign.

** If you have results, reports and match times, please email hookresults@yahoo.com to help our coverage of this year’s cup and league competitions.

Alexandra College confirmed their place in the final four of the Leinster schoolgirl’s Premier League as they recorded their fifth successive victory last Saturday morning at Loreto, Foxrock, running up a 6-0 success.

It means they follow St Andrew’s and Mount Anville into the semi-finals as they produced a fine performance in this fixture which was initially postponed from last December due to frost.

Alex started strongly with most attacks going through Vanessa Winn at right back who was linking up well with the midfield and marauding up the line into the 25 and circle on numerous occasions.

The forwards were shooting but the Foxrock goalkeeper Rhona Conway-Kenny picking off a series of saves.
Hannah McDermott, Emily Beatty and Louise McPhillips were causing havoc with their pace and link up play but several chances from narrow angles were all kept out.

The deadlock, though, was broken in the 18th minute when a long corner was worked to Erika Hinkson and she beat a couple of defenders before shooting into the bottom corner.

Soon after, Millie O’Donnell grabbed the second when Alex won a penalty corner. Hinkson’s initial shot hit a leg, reseting the set-piece which the Milltown school switched to O’Donnell to score, building a 2-0 half-time lead. It helped build confidence for the second period as coach Miles Warren rotating his forward line, brining in Alison Gibbons, Lauren Power and Anna Roopnarensingh.

They nabbed two quick counter-attack goals, created inside their own half, for Gibbons and Roopnarensingh to make it 4-0. And they continued to dictate the pace which youth Olympian Emily Beatty drive forward at speed to lay up goals for McDermott and McPhillips to score two more goals.

Foxrock’s threat was intermittent with Mollie Lamb – a Leinster U-18 representative as well as lining out for last year’s Dublin U-16 ladiess footballers – showing up well with a number of mazy runs.

But Alex showed their quality and now can confirm their place at the head of the pool should they get a draw against Holy Child, Killiney (4.15pm, Wednesday afternoon in Milltown).

Aisling Naughton’s superb scoring form continued as she made it seven in three games, grabbing the sole goal for Mount Anville in their win over Beaufort. Andrew’s, meanwhile, were 4-1 winners in their fifth round of games, a result which puts them a single goal behind Mount Anville on goal difference.

The pair meet next week in the final round of the pool stages to determine who takes top spot in Group Two and who they will face in the final four.

Rathdown, meanwhile, concluded their Premier League campaign with a pair of wins, first getting the better of King’s Hopsital 4-0 before rounding out the campaign with a 3-2 success against Loreto, Dalkey on December 20.

It was a strong end to the campaign, the KH win coming after sustaining strong early pressure at Palmerstown. But Rathdown steadied themselves with Orla Macken strong in midfield as both sides used quick counter-attacks to create plenty of chances.

Macken netted a corner just before the interval and Aileen Walsh made it 2-0 early in a high tempo second half, finishing off a one-on-one chance. The home team pushed hard to get back into the game and earned two short corners but were unable to get past Rathdown’s keeper Blathnaid Breslin.

And they were stung once more when great approach work from Millie Barnwell created the third for Lauren O’Leary. Macken added the final goal from a short corner in the last ten minutes and her goalscoring spree continued into the final league game before Christmas when she bagged a hat-trick to gain the points against Dalkey. Macken’s Railway Union club mate Kate Lloyd got two back for the Loreto school.

Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League
Back-to-back hat-tricks from Aisling Naughton have pushed Mount Anville to the verge of qualification to the semi-finals of the Schoolgirl’s Premier League as they got the better of King’s Hospital and Loreto Abbey, Dalkey.

With four wins from four, it puts them in a strong position with St Andrews hot on their heels, also with a perfect record, to make the final four though Loreto Beaufort and St Gerards will hope to upset this course of events.

Mount Anville’s win over Dalkey, on a windswept afternoon with squally showers, ended with a deceptive 6-1 scoreline today in Goatstown from an open game.

Naughton went close early on before Kate Lloyd reversed a penalty corner strike which Nicola Walsh saved well. But, from the next phase, Mount Anville scored a great goal as Avril Dooley-O’Carroll quickly launched the ball forward to Vicky Ryan who laid off neatly to Naughton who smacked high and handsome into the top corner.

Her second was even more spectacular after Lisa McCarthy had battled into the circle with the breaking ball roofed first time. Rachel Dooley-O’Carroll added the third after another great McCarthy intervention at sweeper to set the move in motion.

Vicky Ryan made it 4-0 but it was far from one-way traffic as Orla Patton’s midfield battling and Lloyd’s skills up front meant there was always a threat. The Railway player produced a stunning response when she raced past a few defenders before cracking home on her preferred reverse-stick side to make it 4-1 at half-time.

Patton clipped the post just after the break, too, from Dalkey’s second corner but, despite some great saves from Ciara Kirwan, Mount Anville did nab two second half goals with Naughton netting her third goal. The youth international was being shut down quickly by the brave Dalkey defence but finally got a shot off and her strike was augmented by Julia O’Connell’s corner deflection.

Rathdown got the better of Kings Hospital this afternoon. Orla Macken, Millie Barnwell, Lauren O’Leary and Alisha Walsh were all on the mark as they recorded their second win of the campaign.

In Section A, Alexandra College got a vital 2-1 victory over High School to keep their fine run going, leaving the second place very much up for grabs. Mount Sackville threw their hat into the ring with a 3-0 win over Muckross Park to make it a congested race for second with High School, Wesley and Loreto Foxrock also in contention.

Section A: Alexandra College 2 High School 1; Mount Sackville 3 Muckross 0

Section B: Mt Anville 6 (A Naughton 3, R Dooley-O’Carroll, V Ryan, J O’Connell) Loreto Dalkey 1 (K Lloyd); King’s Hospital 0 Mount Anville 3 (A Naughton 3); Kings Hospital 0 Rathdown 4 (O Macken, L O’Leary, M Barnwell, A Walsh); Rathdown 0 St Andrews 4

Schoolgirl’s Premier League round-up
Rathdown took their first three points since returning to the Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League with 4-2 win over Bray’s St Gerard’s. The Glenageary School, under the management of Graham Shaw, were full value for their win following initial losses to Mount Anville and Loreto Beaufort.

The away side were first out of the blocks with a strong midfield performance in particular from Leinster players Orla Macken and Sarah Evans; Rathdown’s pressure paid off as Evans netted the opener with a fine individual effort when she rounded the keeper to hit the backboard.

And they went further ahead midway through the first half when Macken drove home from just inside the circle. Trailing 2-0 at half time, the home side awoke and pushed hard to get back into the game, a convincing performance from Bryony Biggam led to the Bray side pulling a goal back midway through the half.

As Gerard’s pursued the equaliser, the pacy Rathdown counter-attack paid dividends as Macken netted Rathdown’s third when she drove home a fine hit with 10 minutes left on the clock. Gerard’s once again fought back to try and rescue a point but the home side was unable to break down a well marshalled Rathdown rear guard with Blathnaid Breslin excelling between the posts.

The away side secured its first win of the season when Lauren O’Leary tapped in at the back post following a neat build up before Gerard’s last minute goal reduced the deficit.

Shaw’s charges will take great confidence from this result into their remaining pool games. It put a dent in Gerard’s play-off hopes after Mount Anville picked up a result against them last Saturday, too, with a 3-0 win. Underage international Aisling Naughton netted twice – one from the penalty spot – while Rachel Dooley-O’Carroll was also on the mark. The Goatstown school heads up the Section B table with a perfect record to date.

In Section A, High School began their campaign just before the half-term break with a cracking 5-3 win over Holy Child, Killiney.

Holy Child managed to get ahead early but High School held strong and scored their equaliser not long after and moved them ahead with Lucy Barlow’s first of a hat-trick while Emma Russell netted in response with some great goals but could not reel in the margin.

Alexandra College, meanwhile, look well on course for a return to the semi-finals after they produced a brave 2-1 win at a sodden Wesley this afternoon, coming from a goal behind in the last ten minutes.

An even first half had ended scoreless with Emily Beatty’s reverse going over and Hannah McDermott’s corner effort being taken off the line among the best of the chances. Wesley hit the front midway through the second period during their most productive spell as a penalty corner broke down but was returned with interest as the impressive Niamh Sweeney played the ball wide for Lauren Haughton to ghost around the left wing.

She laid off for Inge Dalzell to finish off. And, with Sarah Robinson and Jennifer Anderson looking composed at the back, it might have been enough but for Amber Gleeson’s late show. She won a corner racing down the right which she duly cracked home before Beatty snatched the winner after another right-wing incursion was not cleared. It brings Alex’s record to three wins from three.

All-Ireland Schoolboy’s Championships final
Final: Banbridge 2 (M Bell, O Magee) Cookstown 1 (T Johnston)
Banbridge Academy became just the third school to retain the All-Ireland Schoolboy’s crown in its 30 year history as Owen Magee grabbed a winner 14 minutes from time to deny Ulster rivals Cookstown in Garryduff.

Magee dived full length to touch home a Matthew Bell drag-flick to make it 2-1 and the Co Down side held on to win the Tasmanian trophy for a fourth time and the first to go back-to-back since RBAI completed the feat in the mid-1990s.

Post-match speeches and presentations alluded to this not being a classic final, tiredness from five games in three days cited as a factor, but it had plenty of charms.

Not least were the sterling performances of the goalkeepers, especially Michael Anderson who managed to keep out all seven of Cookstown’s penalty corners, denying senior international Ian Sloan at every turn.

His first went closest of them all, tipped onto the post with the slightest touch to a high, travelling effort.
Academy responded in kind, Michael Duggan driving down the right wing to win an 11th minute corner which Bell slid home low to the glove-side

He had earlier been Bann’s hero in the semi-final, grabbing an equaliser four minutes from time against St Andrew’s, cancelling out Fiachra Maher’s deflected effort and forcing penalty strokes.

Indeed, during the week he showed his ice cool nerve with a last second winner against Midleton and he had no qualms about shooting home his first corner shot of the final.

The riposte was instant, Cookstown winning their third and fourth corner and while neither drew a goal, the fourth was palmed out for a long corner by Anderson.

It was neatly worked out to Matthew Rollins on the 25 – playing with heavy bandaging on his head due to a stray ball striking him in the semi-final with Wesley – and he whipped a power-slap at a perfect angle for Tony Johnston to deflect high into the roof of the net.

The Co Tyrone side were enjoying the edge in these phases, winning another couple of corners but, with Magee and Johnny McKee lurking on the counter, there was always a threat.

None more so than when a steal in midfield saw four quick passes for the excellent Ben Cosgrove to flip into Magee’s path and his first-time crack drew a robust stop from Jamie Kirkpatrick.

Into the second half, Magee’s near post deflection to the industrious Rory Woods’ cross clipped the sideboard before Sloan began to show his threat. First, he fired a dangerous reverse across the face of goal to wreak some havoc.

But his side were caught when the over-lapping Duggan was bundled over just inside the 25. From the corner, Magee stretched out a stick to beat Kirkpatrick and the two linesmen with a deft effort.

Cookstown’s response was mighty, Rollins marauding forward from the back to clip a sweet reverse which Anderson brilliantly pushed away while Sloan’s virtuoso solo run ended in the side-netting.

With time running out, the Irish international almost capitalised as Bann delayed a free-out and saw the decision reversed. Sloan was on it like a light but Anderson was alert to stay tall and boot the shot clear.

Magee and Woods showed maturity to run the clock out, winning a corner on the final hooter. Bann initially raced onto the pitch to celebrate before taking the corner. It came to nothing but mattered little as they welcomed back the Tasmanian shield for another year in Co Down.

Earlier in the day, both northern teams progressed to the final ahead of Leinster opposition as, for a second year running, both semi-finals went to penalty strokes.

St Andrew’s fell 3-0 to Banbridge in their competition after Bell’s late flick tied up a game which the Dubliners led for a long period. Wesley were undone on the eighth round of sudden death penalties, 7-6, by Cookstown. Sloan had put the Ulster side in front with time running out before Kirk Shimmins gave his side a lifeline but they could not see it home in the shoot-out.

Umpires: Andrew Gray, Malcolm Coombes

Banbridge Academy: M Anderson, T Sturgeon, M Bell, P Brown, A Bingham, B Cosgrove, R Woods, O Magee, J McKee, P Bennington, M Duggan
Subs: R Millar, P Johnston, A Gillis, J Anderson, S Nelson

All-Ireland Schoolboy’s Championships
Semi-finals: St Andrew’s 1 (F Maher) Banbridge 1 (M Bell), Banbridge won 3-0 on penalties; Wesley 1 (K Shimmins) Cookstown HS 1 (I Sloan), Cookstown won 7-6 on penalties.

Wesley and St Andrew’s returned to the semi-finals of the All-Ireland Schoolboys Championships as they got the wins they needed against Ashton and Friends, respectively.

It means the Ballinteer boys will face Ian Sloan and his Cookstown HS team mates in the final four early on Friday morning while the Andrew’s play Banbridge Academy in a repeat of the 2010 final.

Their progression was far from comfortable, though. Ashton lost the cutting edge which marked their 6-1 morning win over Sullivan Upper and let slip seven penalty corner chances. Ian Stewart, meanwhile, snapped up the chances which came his way, netting in the first minute of the tie and got an insurance goal later on to punish the Blackrock Road school’s profligacy.

It leaves Conor Motyer and Kyle Good in a decent position to add a coaching All-Ireland title to the playing crown they earned a couple of years ago when they co-captained the side. They are part of the Wesley set-up along with Brian Delany.

Andrew’s corner prowess helped them through against Friends. Needing just a draw, the first half was tight for the Booterstown side as the Ulster school held more possession and clipped a post and the bar.

After a scoreless first half, though, Andrew’s stepped up as Fiachra Maher twice slid onto disguised David Cole corner flicks, sandwiching a straight Cole drag. Friends did pull one back but Lee Cole’s solo effort capped a solid win, over-turning a 4-3 loss to the same opposition a month ago in a friendly tie.

The Leinster duo join Bann and Cookstown in the final four. The two Ulster sides were virtually assured of progression barring large defeats going into their third group games but both completed wins.

Cookstown almost fell to a huge shock as Keith O’Hare, Jack Spain and Jack Ryan built a 3-1 lead for Sutton Park but a four-star second half saw the Co Tyrone school bounce back in style.

Banbridge played out one of the highest quality ties of the tournament against RBAI. The goal which settled it was of the fortuitous kind as Michael Colussi’s reach shot, rescuing the ball from just before the endline, was going across goal until an unlucky defender could only redirect into the backboard.

This tie was decided by Bann’s late show against Midleton in the morning when Matthew Bell struck with the last touch of the game for a 2-1 win. And the East Cork side were out on their feet but still held out for a 1-1 draw against St Columba’s for whom Ross Canning dragged home his second goal of the competition.

All-Ireland Schoolboy’s Championships – second series results
Wesley and St Andrew’s face straight showdowns with Ashton and Friends, respectively, for a semi-final place in the All-Ireland Schoolboy’s Championships following the morning results in Cork.

Wes have the most to do after they fought off a gritty Wallace at Garryduff 3-2. Jordan Sutton’s reverse thunder-bolt set them on their way but they could not shake off the Lisburn school despite Ian Stewart’s neat volley as Conor Kelly pegged them back initially.

Luke Madeley’s corner rebound again put the Ballinteer side clear but a late Timmy Crean goal brought it back into a nervy state. With Ashton knocking six past Sullivan, they have the benefit of a much stronger goal difference and so will advance with a draw from the game.

Andrew’s have the opposite equation to Wesley having added a 4-1 win over Bandon to a 6-0 success against Regent House yesterday and so are in good shape.

Cookstown look home and hosed in group one as they beat Campbell College 4-1 with Ian Sloan bringing his tournament tally to ten in two games with a quartet of goals.

Sutton Park and Newpark played out a lively 2-2 draw, Jack Walsh nabbing the equaliser close to the end. Johnny McCormack’s rebound had given the Blackrock side the lead but Aodan Fee and Shane Graham turned the game around only for Walsh to nab the leveller.

Banbridge, meanwhile, need to avoid a five-goal defeat to RBAI – or a massive result for Midleton against Columba’s – as their last gasp win over Midleton put them in the box seat.

The East Cork side were level at 1-1 thanks to Andrew Colton’s third of the tournament until the final hooter when Bann scored from a last-gasp corner.
