Monkstown, Railway, Muckross and North Kildare win through in indoor league

Monkstown, Railway Union A, Muckross and North Kildare all advanced to the final four of their respective Leinster Indoor League competitions following quarter-final day at St Columba’s.

The Cole brothers Stephen and Geoff laid on the win for Town against Glenanne in the first men’s playoff of the day. They did fall behind but scored the next three goals in an extremely tight tie to lead 3-1 with Geoff netting twice and Stephen adding his 12th goal from corners from the ‘unorthodox’ side of the circle.

UCD won twice on Saturday evening to advance straight to the semi-finals

The Glens got one back – Stu Ronan and Sam O’Connor on the mark in this tie for them – but Monkstown held on for a 3-2 win and a semi-final spot in their return year to the code. They play Three Rock Rovers on January 26th.

Railway were guaranteed a place in the semi-final against YMCA with their A side drawn against their Bs in their playoff. But it was far closer than expected as Jeremy McKeever put the Bs into a deserved lead in the first 10 minutes.

The As got back level at half-time, however, and were in control at 3-1 with Richie Forrest scoring two and Eoin MacArthur the other. Karl Chapple got one back and the B side had a stroke awarded but then over-turned with two minutes to go which provided late drama.

In the women’s tournament, Muckross fought back from 2-0 down to eliminate Glenanne 3-2. Two Audrey Westlake corner goals had the Tallaght side flying high but Kim Baker got Muckross on the board, Sarah Quill equalised and Sophie Barnwell got the winner with six minutes to go.

Their reward is a semi-final spot against UCD who won both of their matches on Saturday evening in the remaining Pool B fixtures, beating Old Alex 10-1 and Bray 8-1 to win the group.

North Kildare were too strong for the youthful Mount Temple side with Liz Hassett, Emilie Ryan-Doyle, Elena Teevan and Neassa O’Malley scoring in a 4-0 success. Their semi-final sees them come up against Railway Union.
