Muckross to face Mount Anville in Junior Cup final

Muckross Park will meet Mount Anville in the Leinster Schoolgirls Junior Cup final at 2pm (Belfield) after they fought through dramatic semi-finals against Teresians and Mount Sackville, respectively.

For reigning champions Muckross, their tie went right to the very last shoot-out before the deadlock was eventually broken.

The Marlborough Road outfit had most of the possession but the Teresians’ defence were excellent stopping attack after attack.  Jessica McConn Walsh was threatening upfront for Teresians while Charlotte Walsh and Izzy De Chaumont were always a threat for Muckross who won eight penalty corners to one.

In 1 v 1s, both goalies excelled to thwart all the players. On the fourth 1 v 1 for Muckross, a stroke was awarded but was pushed wide. It left it still at 0-0 before Muckross’s Walsh was awarded a retake for an unintentional foul by the goalie.

She finally squeezed the ball home to end the game 1-0 and send Muckross on to the final.

A day later on Saturday morning, Anville won the battle of the Mounts against their Sackville counterparts in Goatstown 2-0.

The hosts held sway for much of the first half with a large percentage of possession with northside opponents dangerous on the counter.

Anville came away with 15 circle entries and two short corners to show for their efforts but both teams returned to the dugouts scoreless at the end of the first half.

With renewed spirits, Mount Anville continued where they left off but an outstanding performance by the Mount Sackville keeper held them at bay until well into the second half.

But, from a free from the edge of the D, Georgia Kelly dribbled into the circle and gave a reverse pass to Juliet O’Hanlon who finished it off, finally breaking through.

Soon after the restart, Sackville won a short corner but this was cleared well by captain Jenny Costello.

Minutes later, Kelly intercepted a pass from a free out and got the ball away to O’Hanlon who was waiting in the circle to capitalise again.

Anville were awarded a further seven short corners which were well defended by Mount Sackville but the Castleknock crew could not make any inroads into the deficit.
