Glenanne, Monkstown and Naas make big moves in Leinster

Glenanne closed out a productive eight-days with seven points to their name in women’s Leinster Division One to rise to third in the table.

They closed out the week on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Genesis at St Raphaela’s with Audrey Westlake and Clare Shillington both netting a pair of goals with Rachel O’Brien getting the other.

It added to last weekend’s 1-0 success against North Kildare and an important 1-1 draw with Trinity in midweek, lifting them from the lower reaches of the table to a strong position.

Monkstown are another side who had a good week, backing up their win over Trinity with a comprehensive 8-0 victory over Rathgar.

Claire O’Reilly put them one up in the first quarter before Courtney du Prezz – a recent arrival from South Africa – got the second before half-time. Sadhbh Hoban Logan got the third in the third quarter and they ran up five more goals in the final quarter.

Town now sit in fourth place with games in hand on each of the sides above them.

Naas are level with Town on 10 points thanks a strong 5-1 win in their derby against North Kildare. The visitors to Caragh Road did have the best of the first quarter but could not make full use of it.

Two Naas goals in quick succession gave them a platform, though, with Lydia Cope slotting home from close range and Ruth Farrell looped in the next on her reverse.

Farrell went high again for her second and Ruth Gardiner made it 4-0 when she pounced on a saved penalty corner strike. Sarah Jennings took the direct route from the set piece before Elaine Pollard pulled one back late on.

Corinthian, meanwhile, faced one of their toughest tests to date as Clontarf kept them at bay for 66 minutes until Sara Quill got the end of a penalty corner for a 1-0 win.

Their eighth win on the bounce, it gives them an eight point lead in the table and 12 back to third place.
