Trinity’s 53-game unbeaten run ended by Corinthian

Corinthian ended Trinity’s incredible unbeaten run in women’s Leinster Division One, their run ending at 53 games since their last defeat in the provincial competition.

That dates back to November 9, 2015 and encompassed the entirety of their 2016/17 and 2018/19 seasons either side of their year in the EY Hockey League.

It was a further statement from the reds who also beat Trinity in EY Hockey League Division 2 a week earlier and continues their excellent run of form on all fronts.

Cilia Holdermann – a German student at St Columba’s – opened the scoring 10 minutes in with a super reverse-stick strike. Erica Markey levelled the game a two minutes later from a penalty corner but the reds were back in front after a lovely team move, created by Jodie Douglas and Nicola Torrans and scored by Lauren McGrane.

Holderman then added a fantastic individual goal in the second half to give Corinthian some breathing room. Jessica McGrane made extra sure with four minutes to go from a corner.

The win ekes out a three-point lead over the students with five wins out of five to their name.

In the Irish Hockey Trophy, North Kildare advanced with a shoot-out win over Genesis, snatching their chance despite Clodagh Fullston grabbing an equaliser in normal time.

Division Three side Kilkenny are into the last eight following a 3-2 win in Galway. Avoca proved too string for Division Two’s Three Rock Rovers with a 4-0 success while Bray bowed out at the hands of Lisnagarvey and Rathgar were undone by Armagh 3-1.

Kilkenny celebrate their win in Galway

NUIG will be the sole Connacht representative left after Niamh Barry, Freddie Timmons and Maebh Corcoran scored in a 3-1 win at Bandon. Ulster sides Raphoe and Portadown also advanced.
