Women’s EYHL Division 2/Leinster Division One round-up
Corinthian have taken control of women’s EYHL Division 2 with a big 2-0 win over Leinster rivals Trinity, making it three wins from three in Pool A and moving seven points clear of the chasers.
Hannah McKay laid on the perfect pass for Lauren McGrane to deflect in the opening goal in the 23rd minute and they sealed the deal in the closing three minutes when Ciara Vincent cashed in.
The result leaves Trinity with eight points to make up on the reds in the group but with a game in hand.
Cork C of I are one point better off thanks to their 3-1 win over NUIG. Jenny Buttimer put the Galway side in front but Kay Gaffney’s penalty corner and an Emma Rumley strike – also from a set piece – made it 2-1 at half-time.
Abi O’Mahony’s glorious goal made it 3-1 toward the end of the third quarter.
In Pool B, Ards are rapidly closing in on a semi-final spot thanks to a third successive win, seeing off Greenfields 9-0 courtesy of a quartet of goals from Zara Malseed.
They have 12 points out of 12 to date with Monkstown next best placed with six and a game in hand. Town drew 0-0 at Queen’s University’s spectacular new pitch which was open for business for the first time this week.
The tie itself was stymied by a heavy amount of rain which made conditions difficult for both sides to play at their usual tempo.
In Leinster, meanwhile, Corinthian beat Glenanne on Sunday to make it four wins in eight days, continuing their awesome start to the season. Leigh Pelow gave them a 1-0 half-time lead before captain Lauren McGrane added two more and Isabelle Maleady completed the win.
It added to last week’s 4-0 win over Naas and a midweek success against Monkstown. Roisin O’Brien’s single goal on Saturday had given Glenanne a 1-0 win over Avoca.
Genesis continued their excellent start to the season on Saturday with a 2-1 win over North Kildare, Clodagh Fullston and Laura Barrie getting the goals.
It was their third win out of four, putting them three points off the leading pair Trinity and Corinthian.
Naas, meanwhile, got their first win with a 4-0 success at Caragh Road against Rathgar. Saidhbh Farrell sprinted straight through on the keeper for the first; her second was a corner deflection.
Eimear McCarthy scored from a corner while Rosin Sexton hammered in a screamer from the edge of the circle.
