Andrew’s and Wesley play out high quality draw

St Andrew’s and Wesley drew a high quality Leinster Senior A league tie as both look set to be contenders for a semi-final berth from Section B of the competition.

A tight and cagey first half ended scoreless with Andrew’s slightly on top with Fionn Marriott charging down a couple of penalty corner chances.

The Booterstown side went ahead via a Ryan Spencer reverse-stick shot but could not build on it further as Max Guilfoyle was denied by the inside of the goalkeeper’s boot.

Wesley availed of the let off and got their equaliser for 1-1 with two minutes left when a crash ball fell to Tom Power to tap in.

For Andrew’s, it added to a busy start to the season with wins under their bealt against High School (6-2), King’s Hospital (3-0), Newpark (6-0) and St Columba’s (5-0) from their mix of games.

High School, meanwhile, prevailed against Wesley in the Whiteside Trophy 3-1, building a 2-0 lead before Josh Evers got one back but the Rathgar outfit saw out the win. They also beat Sandford Park 6-1 in their first league Section A tie, making for a decent start to their campaign.

In their group, Newpark have two wins from two with wins over Sandford and St Andrew’s B.

Elsewhere, Kilkenny College completed the Leinster contingent for the All-Ireland Schoolboy Championships when they won the final playoff 5-0 against Sutton Park with goals from Cameron Wagenaar, Henry Huston, Leo Cahill, Isaac Wolfe and John MacNamara.

They join the pre-qualified Andrew’s, High School and Wesley as well as King’s Hospital and Newpark who prevailed in the first round of qualifiers.
