Big guns Clontarf, Avoca and Railway all prevail in Leinster Division One

Preseason favourites Clontarf, Avoca and Railway Union all ran up high scores in men’s Leinster Division One to make it two wins from two in the competition thus far.

Avoca added to their 7-1 win a week ago with a resounding 9-0 win over Dublin University with returnee Richard Couse scoring a hat trick, making it five goals in two games.

Cameron Ramsay started the scoring before Couse got two by the 20th minute. Jonathan Elmes made it 4-0 at the break while a Couse corner completed his triple before Cian Funge added two more in the closing seven minutes with Elmes and Ruari Nolan also weighing in.

Clontarf scored one more but did concede three against Bray as John Mullins netted a triple for the Bulls. It was 2-0 in the first quarter before Bray put them to the test, hitting the post in the second quarter.

However, six goals in the third quarter suddenly saw Clontarf racing away and while Bray got two back, another two Tarf goals helped made it 10-3 in the final reckoning. A day later, Clontarf went one better in the Neville Cup, winning 11-3 against Division 3 side Naas.

Railway got their second win of the campaign in Lucan as they beat Weston 5-1 with Richie Forrest another hat trick scorer. With Felim Kelly and Michael MacKenzie also scoring, they built a five-goal advantage before Keith Bell got a consolation.

The other two games in the division were far closer. Rathgar landed their second win of the campaign with a 2-1 success against Kilkenny.

Mark Collins gave ‘gar an early lead in the first quarter following good work from Andy Malcolm who played the ball to the back post for a deflection in.

On the stroke of half-time, Malcolm intercepted a miscued overhead from the Kilkenny defence and played a direct through ball to Mark Holland who was 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

The hosts had a number of corners but couldn’t convert following good saves from Ian O’Keeffe. Kilkenny came back into the match and pulled a goal back in the third quarter from Eamonn Walsh to make it a tight finish.

The cats piled the pressure on in the final quarter although they could not break through the Rathgar defence and it finished 2-1.

Portrane were 2-1 winners in the Fingal derby against Dublin North. Mukhtar Ahmed’s looping reound and a deflection from Adam Agnew accounted for the goals for the hosts while Liam Metcalfe’s behind the back deflection saw North on the board.

In Munster, C of I survived the rain to beat UCC 6-1 and make another statement that they are the side to catch in the province. Eoin Finnegan scored a hat trick against his former club with Rob Sweetnam – another new arrival from Bandon – got two.

The tie was briefly interrupted due to the heavy rain with the lower pitch at the Duff bowl waterlogged. At half-time, play was switched to the upper pitch at the venue with the score at 3-0.

The change of turf briefly suited the students who got one back through Evin McClure but the hosts soon raced clear.

An Andrew Dale double earned Harlequins a narrow 3-2 win over Catholic Institute in Limerick while Waterford bounced back from their chastening 9-1 defeat on day one to Bandon with a 4-1 success against Ashton.
