Pembroke and Monkstown win top youth club titles on St Patrick’s Day

Pembroke and Monkstown took the youth laurels on Leinster finals day, winning the Junior Jacqui Potter Cup and Benny Atkinson titles, respectively.

Pembroke won the girls crown for first time in 14 years as they denied Muckross a third success in a row at this level via a shoot-out.

In an even game with chances at both ends, normal time ended scoreless in a quality affair. Leah Keogh stood out on the pembroke side creating a link in the midfield for the PWHC defense, playing a key role in a tie that went end to end with chances created from both teams.

India Cotter from Muckross was an ever-growing threat but was managed well by the Pembroke defense of Ali Griffin, Alex Purcell and Katie Murphy.

In the dying minutes, Pembroke had the chance to win it in normal time when the ball floated through to Lauren Johnston who had a one-on-one which was saved well by Muckross keeper Kate O’Donnell – a hero in midweek in her school’s Senior Premier final.

It sent the game to a shoot-out where Ali Lynch – the Pembroke keeper who made her debut in the EYHL against Ards a day earlier – saved three out of five, allowing Leah Keogh the chance to grab the winner.

In the boys Under-16 final, Monkstown won the day with a brilliant behind-the-back finish from Tom Varian with just a few minutes to go to edge out Three Rock Rovers 2-1.

They had taken an early lead via Ben Hickmott’s powerful drag-flick but otherwise found Ben Whelan in brilliant form between the posts for Rovers.

It kept Rovers in the game and they got back to 1-1 with seven minutes to go when Ben Cullen won a corner which Adam Walker flicked home down the glove side.

Monkstown replied in fine fashion with Varian’s touch hitting the crossbar before the follow-up attack saw Dylan Thompson put the ball into the danger zone where Varian got the winner.

Ben Ryder was inches away from another leveller while Ross Clarke saved two late chances for Three Rock to see Monkstown win out.
