UCD fell to a second successive defeat in men’s Leinster Division One as injuries threaten to scupper their bid for top spot in the provincial league.
They were beaten 4-3 at Newpark by Avoca with the Blackrock side sweeping back from 3-1 down with 22 minutes to go to continue their fine run of form.
The students looked to be on course to retake first place from Railway – whose midweek win over Dublin North saw them go top – as Andrew Keane, Iain Styles and Andrew Meates put them 3-1 up by the 40th minute.
Evan Rankin – on his 18th birthday – had given Avoca their opening goal just before half-time and they were right back in the mix when Cian Funge got a back post tap-in.
Oisin O’Sullivan’s great solo run and finish got Avoca back level before Ruairi Nolan gave Avoca the lead for the first time with just three minutes to go.
UCD did have a golden chance to grab a point but Jazze Henry hit the post with a full-time penalty stroke.
Recent results have allowed Corinthian to close the gap, too, and they are now level with UCD and one point off Railway with four games to go.
The reds had a handy enough afternoon as they built a 6-1 half-time lead over Kilkenny and while the cats fought back well in the second half, they were well out of sight with Davy Howard and Josh Greaney scoring two each.
Clontarf made it four wins in a row when they edged out Dublin University 2-1 to look like they will be the fourth place finishers but third is formally out of reach now.
