The Irish women’s FIH Series Finals schedule has been confirmed with the side beginning their campaign against Malaysia on June 8 before facing the Czech Republic the following day. They will complete the group stage against Singapore, hoping they can secure top spot in the group which would ensure a couple of rest days before the semi-finals on June 15. Second and third in each group go through to the crossover games with fourth eliminated.
Reach the final and Ireland will be assured of a place in the head-to-head Olympic qualification events which will be held in October and November. The opposite group features Korea, Scotland, Ukraine and France.
The intrigue, though, is where exactly the tournament will be played with UCD no longer the de facto venue according to The 42 and RTE. Belfield was the preferred option with the UCD campus as close to a drop-in venue as is available in Ireland at the moment should the pitch be replaced.
But it is understood the contractor cannot guarantee the pitch will be ready for action in time for the tournament and so Hockey Ireland is exploring other options – potentially including Abbotstown which is also due to start construction work soon.
