They edged out city rivals Loreto Kilkenny in an incredible shoot-out, going through six rounds of sudden death to win the regional trophy for a third year in a row.
Within the opening minute, Kilkenny College took the lead. A sly interception by Emily Dundon off the Loreto tip off, two quick passes and an impressive reverse cross from Megan Telford Kelly sent the ball to Jessie Wagenaar who slung it into the bottom right corner.
Following this, Kilkenny’s defence absorbed intense pressure from Loreto’s forward line. A powerful reverse hit from Rachel Kelly slammed in past the College defence, equalising the sides in the closing minutes of the first half.
The second half commenced and both teams were out to score. Loreto obtained two short corners but no outcome came from either while a disallowed goal for the college side meant the final whistle blew and it was shoot-out time. After 11 shoot-outs, the sides were level on four goals each and a stroke from each team.
Captain Izzy Bourke scored in the 11th round for the college after which Ellie McLoughlin expertly denied Hannah Kelly, claiming the senior cup title once again.
