Railway, NK and Glenanne start off strong indoors

Railway Union made a strong statement with an opening 5-2 win over UCD on day one of the women’s Leinster indoor league. Hannah de Burgh Whyte scored twice in the victory while Katie Fearon found the net on her indoor debut. Orla Fox and Kate Orr got the other goals.

UCD bounced back later in the afternoon with a 4-3 win over Muckross, leaving them level with Railway on three points but with an extra game played. The pool plays to a completion on January 6 when each club will face Newbridge while Railway face Muckross, too.

In Pool B, Glenanne and North Kildare lead the way with four points each following a win and a draw each. Kildare opened up with a 3-0 win over Bray, Emilie Ryan-Doyle, Neassa O’Malley and Emily Menzies getting them off to a great start.

Glenanne followed them on court to beat Three Rock Rovers 4-1, scoring three times in the first three minutes to get their campaign off to a perfect start.

They ended their first day with four points when they dree 2-2 with North Kildare; Menzies was joined on the score sheet by Liz Hassett for the Kilcock side.

Three Rock bounced back from their initial loss to beat Bray 5-3 with Steph Lyon scoring two while Orna Bools got her second of the day, too, to give them a chance of advancing in January when they play North Kildare. Glenanne face Bray in their last match.

On the men’s side, Railway Union II and YMCA recorded wins over Bray on the first day of their campaign last week, the former winning 4-0, the latter 4-3. Three Rock and Pembroke make their entry into this group next Sunday.

In Pool B, Kilkenny started with two wins with guest star Stephen Cole making an impact. They beat North Kildare 8-1 and Corinthian 6-3. Railway I won their one game 6-4 against Glenanne; the Glens did win their other game 13-0 against North Kildare to be in the mix for a playoff place.

The Kildare side complete their group campaign next Sunday with games against Railway and Corinthian.
