Muckross and High School into quarters while Newbridge in final four

Muckross Park and the High School completed the Leinster Schoolgirls Senior Cup quarter-final line-up with their respective wins over Loreto Dalkey and St Gerard’s while Newbridge are in the semis.

For Muckross, they went through with a 2-0 win over Dalkey. The 2017 champions found it hard to break through despite plenty of penalty corners and opportunities from play against a Dalkey defence that were tough to break down.

In the end, a goal in each half proved the difference with Aobha Walsh getting the opener before the break and Fiona McNulty sealing the deal in the second. Next up for them is a Saturday morning date against St Andrew’s College in Booterstown.

High School following their win over St Gerard’s

The High School went the distance against St Gerard’s after a cracking 2-2 draw before winning a shoot-out. The Rathgar outfit started on the offensive with great attacks via their right and left backs.

Their press paid off 20 minutes in through the midfield threats of Roseanne McCullough and Laura Motyer co-ordinating a turnover to get a left side attack which Motyer finished off; 1-0 half time.

Into the second half, they wen 2-0 up via a short corner switch goal from Izzy Bowen. From there, Gerards stepped up their press for 15 minutes and soon won a lot of penalty corner, using that avenue to score two well-executed moves by Rachael Cullen both times.

It sent the game to a shoot-out where it was 3-3 after the first series of five before an Elé Ní Chonbhuí save and Motyer’s slotted reverse grabbed the win.

Their reward is a date against Teresians in the final four next Thursday, December 20. Wesley face Loreto Foxrock on Tuesday afternoon in Ballinteer.

Newbridge College are already through to the final four thanks to a 3-0 win over St Columba’s on Monday evening. All the goals came in the second half again after a pretty frustrating first 30 minutes for the Kildare side.

Columba’s did manage to produce one scare late in the first half but it was primarily Newbridge on the up. They opened the scoring eight minutes into the second half direct from a penalty corner through Ellie Henry.

They doubled the lead five minutes later when Mary Enright put away a rebound after Kate Grant’s shot was saved. The game was put beyond doubt late on when Kate Masterson tapped in a penalty corner variation.

Senior Cup, last 16: Muckross Park 2 (A Walsh, F McNulty) Loreto Dalkey 0; High School 2 (L Motyer, I Bowen) St Gerard’s 2 (R Cullen 2), High School won shoot-out 4-3
