The Irish women’s team received a major boost on Tuesday with SoftCo, a leading global finance automation software provider, announcing their sponsorship of the team for the 2018 World Cup in London.
The sponsorship includes the upcoming ‘SoftCo Series’ World Cup preparation matches against Canada taking place in Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club on June 15 and 16.
It grows SoftCo’s involvement in hockey. The company was a long-time sponsor of Hermes, continuing and expanding that sponsorship following their amalgamation with Monkstown three years ago.
Recently, the company was involved with the Irish Under-21s last summer for the Europeans in Valencia. The company has strong hockey connections with co-founder Susan Spence having played to representative level while CEO Anton Scott was part of the excellent Avoca side of the 1990s and lined out for the Irish men.
Spence, speaking about the announcement, said: “We are delighted to support the Ireland women’s hockey team at this exciting time with the team heading to London for 2018 World Cup.
“Although SoftCo is a global organisation, we are proud of our Irish roots and it is great to see the team compete on the world stage in such a huge event.”
In an interview with Sport For Business, she added: “We like to support local and support our people and we back Monstown Hockey Club as a sponsor through our SoftCo Foundation.
“That prompted Hockey Ireland to approach us a month ago with the offer of backing the Women’s National team and when we looked at what they had achieved in getting to a World Cup it looked like a good fit.
“We hadn’t been aware that there was no sponsorship and we were surprised by that.
“We felt that by backing the Irish team at the World Cup that we could bring them just a little closer to the level of backing that their rivals would be enjoying.”
Spence added that Ireland’s games against England and USA at the World Cup in London can provide a perfect environment to entertain key clients.
Jerome Pels, CEO Hockey Ireland added: “Hockey Ireland was in need of major investment to help our squad prepare for the 2018 World Cup.
“SoftCo has answered that call and injected vital funds into our organisation which will have a direct impact on the women’s team as they fine tune their World Cup preparations.”
