Newpark Comprehensive produced one of the shocks of the Leinster Schoolboys hockey season as they beat St Andrew’s College in the third/fourth place playoff of the senior league just before the Easter break.
The relevance of the result is that Andrew’s will now have to go into the All-Ireland qualifiers next season rather than taking up one of the three automatic tickets to the main event. In addition, it could mean a potentially sticky draw as they will not be among the seeds.
Luke Adams was the hero for the Blackrock outfit, netting twice in the 3-2 success. The win came just two days after Andrew’s had completed the third leg of a treble with Senior Cup victory against High School in a shoot-out. That added to All-Ireland and Whiteside Trophy victories.
But while the Booterstown school have hoovered up the trophies, this season has been one of the most competitive in years.
High School will play Wesley College in the league final on April 11 while Newpark will meet High School in the Senior Trophy, most likely to be played a week later in this most protracted of seasons.
