Instonians took top spot from the men’s EY Hockey League Wildcard playoffs as a late equaliser against Corinthian and a second half winner over UCD keeps alive their chances of a return to the EYHL.
On day one, it was the Shawsbridge side and UCD who led the way with two wins from two. UCD won a charged battle with Corinthian 2-1 with Jazze Henry grabbing the winner in the second half, getting them off to a flying start which they backed up with a 6-2 win over UCC – John Guilfoyle with a hat trick.
Inst ran up a 3-0 win over Mossley and backed that up with a 5-0 success against UCC. The Cork students were out of the running after day one, as were Mossley who also lost 3-0 to Corinthian.
UCD opened up day two with a 5-1 win over Mossley to bolster their chances and they had the major advantage when Corinthian and Inst drew 1-1 in a dramatic finale. Alan Blennerhassett gave the reds a 1-0 lead with just one minute to go but Chris Kirk replied seconds later for what would prove a vital point.
It meant UCD needed a draw or better against Inst in the tournament’s penultimate game while the Belfast side required a win or bust.
Guilfoyle flicked in after a corner spin move went awry but fell to the injector. William Robinson levelled on the stroke of half-time when he beat the first runner before switching to his reverse and his shot took a heavy deflection into the net.

Stephen Kelso then got a diving deflection to make it 2-1 to Inst in the second half, the key act from the weekend’s action.
It puts them through to the final round of the provincial playoffs in two weeks time in Cork where they will meet YMCA at Garryduff in their semi-final. Bandon will meet Bangor in the other semi, a repeat of the Irish Hockey Trophy semi-final which the west Cork side won.
