Kilkenny College and Rainey Endowed lead the way after day one of the Kate Russell All-Ireland Schoolgirls Championships as they share the lead on four points after two games.
The hosts got off to a cracking start with Yasmin Pratt giving them a 1-0 lead against Loreto Foxrock with a dipping shot from the left edge of the circle. In the second half, Jessie Wagenaar spun on a ball at the right post for the second goal and while Eve Reidy pulled one back, Kilkenny won 2-1.
Salerno and Mount Mercy opened their campaigns with a 0-0 draw before Kilkenny, in their second game, finished 0-0 against Ulster champs Rainey Endowed.
Both sides had plenty of corner chances but both goalkeepers stood tall, keeping their respective clean sheets in tact. Rainey would later beat Salerno 3-1 with Betty Scott scoring twice and Gabi Scott getting the other, a result that was enough to put the Ulster side top overnight on goal difference.
Loreto Foxrock, meanwhile, got their campaign back on track when they beat Mount Mercy 3-1. Christina Hamill’s penalty stroke put them 1-0 up at half-time and further goals from Sorcha McCooey and Siofra O’Brien copper-fastened the points.
They face a crucial game with Rainey at 9.30am on day two. Kilkenny, meanwhile, will hope they can score some big wins against Mount Mercy and Salerno to put them in the frame for victory.
