Avoca first half treble earns first win while Reds continue free-scoring ways

Three first-half goals saw Avoca land their first win of the Leinster women’s Division One season, leaving Glenanne frustrated at a third successive single-goal defeat.

Like the previous week, they were left to rue that large concession in the first half though they did go ahead in the fourth minute when Marie Goulding swept to rebound off Ruth Murphy following Kate O’Connor’s baseline run.

Avoca recovered quickly and scored three before half-time – Susie Cannon from a corner rebound, Moirin O’Neill finished from close range following good work by Aideen McGuinness, and Orlaith Damery with a first time finish from a lovely Cannon cross.

The second half saw the Glens hit their stride and holding most of the possession but not making much of it in terms of chances until the last 10 minutes, winning several corners.

Goulding finally scrambled home her second and they had another corner on the final whistle but it came to nothing and Avoca had their win.

Corinthian continued their swashbuckling start to the season with a 5-1 win over North Kildare despite Neassa O’Malley’s goal just a couple of minutes in.

The reds soon started to control the game from the back. With well-created runs by the forwards and solid set plays, they were 3-1 up at half time, thanks to goals from Emma O’Brien, Leigh Pelow and Lauren McGrane.

Both sides battled it out without any further goals for the first 10 minutes of the second half but Corinthian began to dominate again towards the latter parts of the second half with two more excellent goals scored by O’Brien and Alanah Quinsey from open play.

Genesis continued their immaculate start to the season with a third clean sheet for Sorcha Cunningham. Annie Kavanagh’s single goal saw them beat Rathgar, making it seven points from nine with two goals scored and none conceded.

The league favourites Old Alex and Muckross recorded a pair of big wins. For Alex, they were 7-1 winners over Our Lady’s who were a little stand-offish in the first 20 minutes and found themselves 3-0 behind and while the Terenure side settled, they did concede a fourth before the break.

The second half was a better contest, finishing 3-1 with Emma Kilbride getting one back but Alex’s balance of youth of experience were a cut above on the day.

For Muckross, hat tricks from teenagers Natasha Twomey and Yasmin Pratt saw them run out 8-0 winners over Clontarf on Saturday.
