UCD – Women’s EY Hockey League preview

Last season: EY Champions Trophy winners; EY Hockey League winners; Irish Senior Cup winners; Jacqui Potter Cup finalists
Coach: Miles Warren (third season)

Players in: Bethany Barr (Liberty Flames, USA); Ellen Curran (Hermes-Monkstown); Freya McDermott (Loreto), Katherine Egan (Old Alex), Emma Young (Kilkenny)
Players out: Millie O’Donnell (emigrating to Australia); Sarah Patton (Erasmus to France); Gillian Pinder (Pembroke Wanderers); Sally Campbell (Trinity Colege)

Overview: The (almost) all-conquering champions will take the field for the new season as one of the clear favourites for the three national titles this time around with Hermes-Monkstown potentially dropping a step back due to player turnover this summer.

With UCD keeping hold of the likes Deirdre Duke, Katie Mullan, Leah Ewart and Sarah Robinson for another campaign along with Lena Tice, Sara Twomey and Emma Russell, Miles Warren has loads of quality to work with.

Bethany Barr – an All-Ireland schools winner with Lurgan – is a great new arrival following her time in the US with the Liberty Flames while senior international Ellen Curran provides a serious engine to their midfield. Curran’s role will probably act as a replacement for Gillian Pinder who moves on to Pembroke.

The volume of internationals has meant a slightly disrupted preseason with players returning from senior and Under-21 duty over the summer. Nonetheless, coach Miles Warren says there has been a “great energy at training as we have healthy competition for places”.
