Ireland’s Under-21 women continued their summer programme with two tough battles against England at Queen’s last weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
They started the first tie in brilliant style with Edel Nyland effecting a great turnover, driving into the circle to set up Rachel Burns for an opening goal.
From there, they had to absorb some pressure but Ireland countered brilliantly with Nyland getting on the end of a Katie Larmour crash ball for a 2-0 lead at the first quarter break.
England, however, got one back before half-time and were level three minutes into the second half. Jessica McMaster went close to restoring the lead while Erin Getty was cleaning up well at the back.
The visitors, however, grabbed a go-ahead goal from a penalty corner and they moved 4-2 ahead in the closing quarter, the eventual final score.
A day later, England scored a goal in each half to win the second tie of the weekend with both sides drawing plenty of lessons for August’s European Junior Championships.
