Andrew Canning scored the vital goal for the second time in a fortnight as High School’s boys added the Leinster Junior Cup title to the league crown courtesy of a 1-0 win over Wesley College.
In the league final, his goal came with the last act of extra time against St Andrew’s. Today at Grange Road, he fired home with a brilliant backhand shot in the 26th minute, adding another maiden title to the Rathgar outfit’s list in a breakthrough season.
The victory also owed much to goalkeeper Ben Cripps who kept out a wealth of attacks, denying Hugo Burns and Ben O’Grady from penalty corners and a brilliant Josh Greaney one-on-one chance in the second half.
After keeping out plenty of pressure in the minutes after half-time, High School duly began to take control in the closing phases to shut down the win.
Harry Lynch was key, launching long overheads while Calum Adair and Canning holding strong in midfield while Ali Empey went close a number of times to doubling the lead.
At Under-13 level, St Andrew’s completed a double of their own as they won 2-1 against Wesley, adding to the league title they won last month.
