The Junior Jacqui Potter Cup first round gets under on Sunday with 25 clubs beginning their bid for the biggest prize in the club schoolgirl game.
Among the interesting ties is a Kildare derby between Naas and Newbridge who regularly meet each other in friendly ties. Naas are going well in the Junior B yellow section and feature Leinster Under-16 star Georgia Dunlop as well as two South East representatives – Ellie McLoughlin and Ruth Gardiner. Newbridge, meanwhile, are mid-table in Junior A.
Wicklow and Old Alex will be an interesting tie with both in similar positions in the Junior B sections. Three Rock and Our Ladys is generally a good, competitive game with plenty of the girls tending to know each other well.
Malahide-Fingal will be a tough away trip for Mount Anville while Portrane travel to Genesis with a side featuring a number of their adult team, gaining experience in the senior leagues.
From previous years, Railway Union, Avoca, Muckross and Corinthian would be among the fancied teams while Pembroke are the in-form side and could make an impact.
The competition itself features players up to and including fourth year in school; it means some players are over 16 with players on Leinster Under-18 panels still in transition year eligible.
The entry list of 25 teams is up on last year and any team knocked out in the first two rounds will go into the Plate. Both the Cup and the Plate finals will take place on St Patrick’s Day.
