Westlake leads Glens big comeback against Muckross

Glenanne came back from 2-0 down to draw with Muckross on Wednesday night for what could prove an important point in the women’s Leinster Division One race for the playoff places.

While both sides started strong, Muckross were the first to capitalise, slotting home a broken down short corner via Katie Ronan. And the Donnybrook side extended their lead when Nicci Daly – against her former club – intercepted a loose pass from the Glenanne defense.

She then laid off to Jane Gilsenan for a one on one opportunity with Glenanne’s Roisín O’Brien for 2-0.

After the break, it was Glenanne who started on the stronger foot. An illegal tackle just outside the circle, saw a free upgraded to a short corner. Clinical thinking from the Glenanne short corner team allowed them claw a goal back through Kate O’Connor.

An outstanding performance from Audrey Westlake saw Irish international Daly’s influence on the game greatly diminished. Westlake’s efforts were rewarded when she converted a second short corner from close range. Both sides had chances in the dying minutes of the game, however ending 2-2 at the final whistle.

Trinity, profited from the result to strengthen their lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over North Kildare with Niamh Sweeney scoring twice and former Botanic player Cliona McCullough on the mark, too. This tie had initially been frozen out with the score level at 1-1.

Avoca, meanwhile, got their second win of the campaign, beating Genesis 4-1. Aifric O’Malley’s first half goal was cancelled out by Yvonne O’Farrell before the Blackrock club struck three times in the second half to move up to eighth.

On Saturday, four matches conclude the first half of the season with Trinity looking to retain their advantage over the pack when they meet Our Lady’s. Old Alex will look to bounce back from the frustration of their loss to North Kildare when they host Rathgar.

Kildare host Muckross and Corinthian play Avoca.
