Senior Cup second round draw sets up potential thrillers

The Leinster Schoolgirls Senior Cup second round draw has produced a series of potentially huge battles for the new year with some big guns set to bow out at an early stage.

There is a potentially big second round tie in the offing with Premier League semi-finalists Mount Anville up against Mount Sackville for the chance of facing the winner of reigning champions Alexandra College who beat Jesus and Mary College in round one.

Another highlight looks set to be a date between High School and Rathdown after the latter got the best of Newbridge College in a shoot-out. Aoife Berkery scored the only goal in normal time to earn the Glenageary outfit a 1-1 draw in normal time before holding their nerve in one-on-ones.

St Gerard’s proved too strong for St Kilian’s in their opening round tie, setting up a tie against either Holy Child Killiney and Sion Hill. Ruth Cullen and Laoise Geraghty netted twice a piece to power their success.

St Joseph’s Cluny and Teresians first round match was frozen off last Saturday and will be refixed. The two Senior One sides are battling for the right to play Wesley in the next round following their 5-0 win over Loreto Dalkey.

Loreto Beaufort will host either Newpark or, more likely, St Andrew’s in a potential thriller third meeting of the season. They tied in their section of the league, leading to playoff game. Santa Sabina face the winner of Muckross and Mount Temple.

St Columba’s meet the winner of Our Lady’s Terenure and King’s Hospital while Loreto Foxrock or Sutton Park will host Loreto Stephen’s Green.

In the Senior Premier League, penalty corner goals from Grace McLoughlin and Laura Nagle saw Loreto Beaufort break down a rugged King’s Hospital and grab a crucial 2-0 win to keep their Senior Premier hopes alive.

The result moved them level in second place in Section A with St Andrew’s who were 5-0 winners over Mount Temple on Tuesday courtesy of Kate Orr’s incredible five-goal haul. Beaufort needed a win to move level with the Booterstown school on 20 points and earn a playoff for a semi-final place.

They bossed the tie against KH on Wednesday for long periods but found the exceptional goalkeeper Jade Arundell in rude health. She showed her skills with an immense triple stop in the 13th minute and she also denied Emma O’Brien, the hugely impressive winger Ali O’Leary and Kate Moore.

The breakthrough came four minutes into the second half when Irish underage international McLoughlin – the game’s star turn – slapped home from a set piece, albeit via a deflection. The swarming Beaufort press led to numerous other chances and they made the game safe with 17 minutes to go from a classy piece of work. McLoughlin squared to O’Leary who returned the ball to the centre where Nagle slammed home.

For KH, they had their moments in attack with Sophie Moore a lively presence from midfield along with Kathy Baker – an Irish rugby international – and her sister Sarah. Georgia Dunlop, meanwhile, was a feisty force in defence with strong close skills.

King’s Hos go on to play in the Claudia Tierney Cup semi-finals while Beaufort have a playoff date with Andrew’s on the horizon.

In Section B, Wesley completed their group stages with a 4-0 win over Mount Sackville while Mount Anville beat Loreto St Stephen’s Green to strengthen their position in the playoff chase.

The vital game is on Tuesday afternoon when Loreto Foxrock play Muckross Park. Foxrock need a draw while Muckross require a win to join Mount Anville in thr semi-finals.
