Women’s Leinster Division One
Genesis moved into a share of first place in women’s Leinster Division One as their strong defensive record played a role in seeing off Our Lady’s 2-0 on Saturday.
They saw off the Terenure side who were shy the services of Aisling Ward, Aoife Kelly, Nicola Dennehy and Sinead Kelly in an even tie. Indeed, early chances fell to Orla Gavan and Ciara Scallan. The former was denied in a one-on-one situation by Sorcha Cunningham while the latter could only find the side-netting from a rebound chance.
Genesis, meanwhile, tested Niamh Mahon from play and from corners and their breakthrough came midway through the second half when they turned over the ball in midfield. A quick pass into the circle to Ali Farrell saw her fire home for 1-0 at the top of the D.
And the clincher came with five minutes to go with Sorcha Conway making the game safe. Our Lady’s has two corners in the second half but Genesis’s defence held firm, meaning they have conceded just once in four games to date.
Avoca picked up their first win of the season as they continued their hoodoo over Rathgar who were left frustrated once again. The Blackrock side had beaten Rathgar three times last term but the High School-based club produced a series of good chances in the first half that should have had them ahead.
Ruth Murphy, however, was in great form and kept everything out during that phase and Avoca caught Rathgar cold early in the second half. Caitlin Sheerin got the goal, her first for the first team, as their young charges – with a forward line with an average age of 17 – struck. Aifric O’Malley netted the second goal of the game for a 2-0 victory, lifting Avoca to sixth place.
Katherine Egan’s single goal saw Old Alex land their third win of the campaign for four outings to move level with their opposition Muckross whose perfect record ended as a result. North Kildare drew 0-0 with Corinthian.
