Ireland’s women notch third Olympic scalp

Women’s senior international test match
Ireland 2 (A O’Flanagan, M Frazer) Spain 0

Second half goals from Anna O’Flanagan and Megan Frazer saw Ireland beat Spain 2-0 at Stormont, making it three wins in succession for the Green Army against Olympic-bound opposition.

It follows wins over Korea and India – both with tickets to Rio – in April and marked another impressive performance for Graham Shaw’s side in spite of several changes in personnel.

The first half ended scoreless with Stella Davis making a couple of fine saves from a trio of Spanish penalty corners while O’Flanagan was closest for Ireland.

She shot the hosts first goal in the 36th minute after Chloe Brown won a corner. Davis had to make a couple of impressive saves once again before Frazer put the game beyond doubt with a low drag-flick with two minutes to go.

Graham Shaw’s side play Spain again on Tuesday at Stormont before switching to Jordanstown on Thursday and Friday for games three and four of this series.
