UCD confirm playoff spot as YM stay in the race

UCD confirmed their place in the EY Hockey League places while YMCA just about kept their chances alive with a last ditch goal against Clontarf.

In a tit for tat opening, David Nolan and Richard Couse before Shane Madeley and Couse did likewise to make it 2-2. But later goals from Brian O’Malley, former Avoca man Andrew Ramsey and Andrew Meates stretched out a 5-2 lead for the students that concludes their Division 1A campaign which guarantees a second place finish.

Clontarf, meanwhile, were left frustrated that they could not secure their place to the playoffs as they were pegged back by YMCA late in the game, sharing a 2-2 draw.

A win would have seen them through as Kevin Mullins struck twice to hand them a 2-1 lead. YM missed a stroke at a key moment when Rob Anderson was denied by Stephen Cairns while the Bulls had their chances to strengthen their position but could not avail of the openings.

And YM punished them late on to draw. It means the battle for the places goes down to April 2 when YM meet Corinthian at Whitechurch Park while they will hope that Clontarf fall to a defeat to Avoca.

Division 1B is exceptionally tight following Fingal’s 5-3 win over Dublin University. The top four in the table are covered by just three points.

Leinster Division 1A: Avoca 2 (R Couse 2) UCD 5 (D Nolan, S Madeley, B O’Malley, A Ramsey, A Meates); YMCA 2 (B Campbell, A Bailey) Clontarf 2 (K Mullins 2)
Division 1B: Fingal 5 Dublin University 3
