Junior Jacqui Potter Plate
Naas 3 (R McMullen, K Hannon, J Kelly) Hermes 1 (L Grehan)
Naas claimed the first trophy of St Patrick’s Day with a composed 3-1 win over Hermes to win the Junior Jacqui Potter Plate, writes Jack McCann
Naas started the game stronger and got the best possible start scoring their first goal from the very first attack in the third minute. Rachel McMullen put the ball in the back of the goal after a bit of a scramble in the D after Naas had entered from the right hand side after good work in the middle of the park.
After the goal, Naas held the majority of the possession and territory for the opening period. However, the times that Hermes did string a few phases of play together, they looked very slick up until they got to the final third where their composure failed at times.
Hermes did get back in the game with their equaliser coming in the 20 minute of the game through Lara Grehan. Hermes put a high press on the Naas hit out, the hit was miscued and Grehan was in on top of the defender to steal the ball. She shifted the ball onto her left and cracked a lovely reverse just above the backboard.
The goal came during Hermes strongest period of the game, however, Naas were resolute in defence, front to back, through the likes of captain Jennings and Jenny Kelly up front working back. The half- time score was 1-1 with Naas having most of the chances but Hermes looking composed for the most part.
The majority of the second half continued in a similar vein to the first, Naas having the majority of the ball and territory with Hermes looking comfortable enough but unable to get a sustained grip on proceedings.
The big breakthrough only came in the final ten minutes as Naas regained the lead with just through Kate Hannon. Hannon swept the ball into the bottom left corner after great work through the middle of pitch my Naas to transfer the ball quickly.
In response to going behind, Hermes pulled their keeper in an effort to find the equaliser. However, they did so to no avail as Naas finished the game off with final play to make it 3-1.
With no keeper on pitch, Hermes had to defend a short corner on the final whistle with five defenders. Naas successfully negated the problem and scored through Jenny Kelly. Kelly got Naas’s well deserved third and individually it was just reward after a good game all round.
