Corinthian are pretty much assured of the first EY Hockey League playoff place from men’s Leinster Division 1A after they recorded their fourth win from five games to date last Saturday with a 1-0 win over Clontarf.
After two three all draws between the these two teams, everyone was expecting another high scoring game however it took a reverse stick shot by Rob McKenna to separate the sides midway through the first half.
It was a hard fought game as both sides pushed for the win. In the second half, Clontarf had their chances and had more short corners. However Ross Murray made a number of fine saves and the Reds defence where on form and managed to keep another clean sheet.
This means Corinthians keep their unbeaten run in the second part of the Leinster league and hold a five point advantage with three games to go while they, importantly, have eight points in the tank ahead of fourth placed YMCA.
After the game, coach Trevor Dagg commented: “You’re always in for a tough game when you play Clontarf. They’re well organised, have plenty of good players, and a good coach so we’re delighted with the win.”
They can confirm their place with a result against Avoca next Saturday.
UCD, meanwhile, further strengthened their place in the top three with a second win in four days over YMCA whose tricky run of form continues. They fell to a third league defeat in seven days with Shane Madeley scoring the only goal of the game for the students.
They face a crucial tie on Saturday once again when they face second placed Clontarf at Mount Temple.
In men’s Division 1B, a second defeat in a week for Weston against Fingal – 6-1 on Saturday to follow a 2-1 midweek loss – means they need to get seven points in their last three games to avoid the bottom rung of the table.
Kilkenny, meanwhile, have an Irish Hockey Trophy final against Bandon to look forward to after they beat Bangor 5-1 last Saturday.
