Corinthian and Clontarf strengthened their hold on two of three tickets to the EY Hockey League playoffs with wins over YMCA and Avoca, respectively, in Leinster Division 1A.Corinthian continued their hoodoo over YM with a 2-0 success with Stephen Reid and Jonathan Roberts scoring the goals. It was their third win of the season over the Y following a Mills Cup success six days before while the other win came in the first phase of the Leinster league.
It ups the ante for YM’s tie with UCD on Tuesday evening. If the students can pick up a win, they will move level on four points with their rivals at the halfway stage in this mini-league for the third ticket to the playoffs. The reds, on 10 points, are rapidly closing in on the first of those tickets while Tarf, also unbeaten, are also well set.
They beat Avoca 3-0 with something to spare. Kevin Murray scored the opener 11 minutes in, touching in behind his back from a reverse stick cross which arrived at waist height in the centre.
The second goal came after 20 minutes from turnover ball over on the sideline inside their own 23m, countering at speed through Zane Hutter. He fed John Mullins who ran the baseline, drawing Stefan Gallagher and slipped the ball to Kevin Mullins to push low into the far corner.
The scoring was finished in the 60th minute, another turnover from deep. Kevin Mullins found Luke Hayden in space who sent a ball into the D for John Mullins to deflect first time into his older brother’s path. He finished with his second touch.
The game slowed down after that with the pitch saturated and Tarf keeping the ball for long periods. They move up to eight points.
In Division 1B, Rathgar moved level with Dublin University thanks to their 2-1 win over Fingal while the students lost 4-3 to Kilkenny.
