Raging Bulls have Corinthian seeing Red with late show

Two goals in the last four minutes saw Clontarf deny Corinthian a third victory in succession in Leinster Division 1A in the most dramatic fashion on Tuesday evening.

It means that both are unbeaten at this early stage of the competition in which the top three will advance to the EYHL playoffs. The reds got off to a good start after a spate of early corners, netting in the 10th minute via Andrew Sutton from a switch move.

Clontarf equalised on 24 minutes via John Lennon while David Howard hit the post with the last act of the first half, leaving it at 1-1. Corinthian, however, did go back into the lead early in the second half from yet another corner, albeit one that was mis-injected and eventually hit home.

It preceded a wealth of cards with Corinthian dropping to nine players before the bulls were later reduced to eight at one stage.

Ian Stewart snuck home a drag-flick for 3-1, one which was half blocked by the first runner and gloved onto the post by the goalkeeper before bobbling past the post man on the line.

Back to 11 players, Clontarf won a corner that Tom Noonan netted. Less than a minute later, John Mullins carried the ball into the D and while his shot was well saved, Kevin Mullins picked up the pieces and flicked home for 3-3 – the second time in the past fortnight the sides have shared that scoreline.

It came three days after Corinthian had edged out UCD 1-0 with Howard’s single goal the divider. The Reds, therefore, lead the way with seven points on the board and off to a good start in pursuit of a top three place.

Clontarf have four points from two games. Next on their agenda is a tie against YMCA at the bull ring. The Y showed their status as favourites with an opening 5-1 win over Avoca with Thom Ritchie, Eric Prehn, Gavin Gibney, Andrew Buckley and Ben Campbell running up the goals.

In Division 1B, Rathgar lead the way after their 4-1 win over Weston, making it two wins from two while Kilkenny drew 2-2 with Fingal.

In midweek, meanwhile, UCD beat Dublin University 2-1 in the men’s firsts game of colours at Grange Road with the result ultimately handing the Belfieders the overall crown.
