Muckross Park end nine-year wait for Junior title

Muckross Park claimed the first major of the schoolgirls hockey season with an exquisite Junior Cup final, getting the best of Teresian College 3-0 at Grange Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Goals from Sophie Maleady, Lelia O’Byrne and Kez Higgins earned them their first title since 2006, putting them in good company. That vintage featured current Irish international star Anna O’Flanagan and this side had a number of top performers with centre-back Niamh Shaw the lynch-pin of this side.

Her side took a first half lead in beautiful fashion. Clodagh Ferry raced up from right back before picking out the run of Ellie Fitzgerald on the baseline. She crossed where Maleady turned home the ball first time for the only goal of the first half.

Muckross moved further ahead when O’Byrne fired home a penalty corner with 20 minutes to go from a clever switch right move. And Higgins closed out the victory late in the game amid a crowded circle to bring the title back to Marlborough Road.
It concludes an impressive run that saw the Donnybrook school win on the road at both Loreto Bray and Newbridge in the early rounds before getting the best of Mount Anville in the quarter-final and Wesley in the semi-final in the last two weeks.
