In a fine acknowledgement of the Irish men’s epic 2015, they have been nominated for two RTE sports awards while Shane O’Donoghue and David Harte are on the shortlist for FIH world player of the year gongs.
On the home front, Craig Fulton and the Irish men’s team have become hockey’s first nominees for the annual RTE sports awards over the weekend after a ground-breaking year for the sport.The coach is on the shortlist for manager of the year with his side up for team of the year after they achieved qualification for the Olympic Games for the first time since 1908.
They backed that up with a maiden bronze medal in the European Championships in London in August, a tournament that featured four of the world’s top five sides. The winner of the RTÉ Sport Team of the Year will be selected by the public via phone and text vote. Voting lines will be open on the night with details announced at the beginning of the programme.
On the FIH front, Harte has been named on the shortlist of five goalkeepers up for the best pads man in the world in 2015. He is alongside the Netherlands Jaap Stockmann, Australia’s Andrew Charter, Canada’s David Carter and Germany’s Nicolas Jacobi.
O’Donoghue is up for the Rising Star award. He will have stiff competition from Germany’s Christopher Ruhr who looks the other stand-out star with India’s Akashdeep Singh, Canada’s Sukhi Panesar and Australia’s Blake Govers on the list.
