Anville and Alex move into Premier semi-finals

Mount Anville and Alexandra College earned places in the Leinster Senior Premier league semi-finals after they won their playoff games on Tuesday afternoon against Holy Child Killiney and St Andrew’s, respectively.

For Anville, Sophie Twomey was the heroine, scoring the winning goal two minutes before the end of silver goal extra time after normal time had ended 2-2.

In tough weather conditions, Natasha Twomey had netted twice for a 2-0 lead for the Goatstown outfit but Holy Child stormed back into contention.

Captain Emma Mathews got them on the board from a well-worked penalty corner which she fired home. And they started the second half with intent, getting level via Abbie Russell’s finish with a well-taken goal.

Conditions worsened as time wore on but both teams continued to create chances. Mount Anville’s forwards created some corners which were well defended by Holy Child until one was deemed to hit a body on the line.

It resulted in a stroke that was put wide, keeping the game level to the full-time whistle and also through the first period of silver goal extra time. Mount Anville, though, provided the sting in the tail to wi through to the final four.

Alex, meanwhile, saw off St Andrew’s 2-0 with a composed, controlled performance. Sophie Roopnarinesingh broke the deadlock in the second half and Katherine Egan made the game safe from a penalty corner rebound.

The Milltown school started strong with the midfield triangle of Ava Beatty, Freya McDermott and Egan bossing the ball but, despite five corners, were not able to break the deadlock in the first half.

As time wore on, though, Alex chances became more clear-cut and Roopnarinesingh was the one to get on the end of a great team move that went off several sticks before finding her finish on the back hand.

A few more corners went astray before Egan pounced on a rebound and she finished low into the backboard. Andrew’s shuffled their deck to try and find a route forward but they got no change out of the Alex defence.

The wins put them through to the semi-finals with Alexandra College going through to meet Loreto Beaufort. Mount Anville play Loreto Foxrock on Friday at Grange Road.

Senior Premier League quarter-finals:
Alexandra College 2 (S Roopnarinesingh, K Egan) St Andrews 0; Mount Anville 3 (N Twomey 2, S Twomey) Holy Child Killiney 2 (E Mathews, A Russell), after extra time
